Posture & Mobility
Practical advice on sitting, standing and working comfortably, and how chiropractic care can help with posture-related discomfort.
Posture is simply the position you hold your body in while sitting, standing or lying down. Holding one position for long stretches is a common source of everyday neck, shoulder and back discomfort, particularly for desk work and driving.
Common symptoms
- Aching across the shoulders or lower back that builds through the working day.
- Stiffness after a long drive or a long stretch at a desk.
- Discomfort that eases when you get up and move.
- Neck ache with headache at the end of the day.
Practical advice
Small adjustments help more than any single perfect position, and changing position regularly matters more than holding one for long periods.
- Sitting: keep your feet flat on the floor, avoid crossing your legs, and adjust your chair so your lower and mid back are supported.
- Standing: keep your knees slightly bent and your feet about shoulder-width apart, with your head level and your ears in line with your shoulders.
- Sleeping: side or back is preferable to your front. A pillow between the knees when on your side, or under the knees when on your back, can help.
- Take regular breaks from any sustained position, at work and at home.
How chiropractic care may help
A chiropractor can recommend exercises to strengthen the muscles that support posture, and give guidance on better positions for your work and daily activities. Where posture-related aches are the problem, manual care may help with comfort and movement alongside that advice.
