Sports & Overuse Injuries
Training and overuse complaints, how they are assessed at River City, and what conservative care can involve.
Most training complaints are overuse problems rather than single dramatic injuries. They tend to follow a change in load: more distance, a new session, a return after time off, or a jump in intensity.
Common symptoms
- An ache that builds during or after activity and settles with rest.
- Discomfort that is worse at the start of a session and eases as you warm up.
- Pain in a specific area that is reproduced by a particular movement or load.
- Stiffness the morning after training.
How chiropractic care may help
For musculoskeletal complaints of this kind, manual care may help with pain and movement, and is usually combined with advice about activity and load. Chiropractic care is conservative care for the musculoskeletal system, and it works alongside sensible training rather than replacing it.
What care may include
Assessment starts with what changed and what provokes the symptoms, followed by an examination of the area and how you move. Care can then include manual treatment and advice on modifying activity, so you keep training in a form your body tolerates while the problem settles.
When to get an injury assessed medically first
Some injuries need imaging or a physician before any hands-on treatment:
- A suspected fracture, or inability to bear weight after an injury.
- Rapid swelling, obvious deformity, or a joint that gives way.
- A significant traumatic injury, such as a heavy fall or collision.
- Numbness, weakness or pins and needles that persists.
If your injury falls outside the scope of conservative care, Dr. Davis will refer you appropriately.
